Escaped Dallas County Inmate Recaptured
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A felony burglary suspect who escaped the Dallas County Jail early Wednesday morning was back in custody nearly 24 hours after he jumped over a razor-wire fence and made a run for freedom.
Authorities said that 38-year-old Donald Greenlee jumped over the fence while taking out trash around 2:00 a.m. Wednesday morning. Crews were seen adding another layer of wire to the fence on Wednesday evening. The jail also changing its system which allows inmates to offer volunteer work like taking out the trash, but those changes were not explained in detail.
According to Sheriff Lupe Valdez, the man cut himself while escaping, and arrived at the hospital early Thursday morning seeking treatment for the deep cuts. Greenlee had changed into civilian clothes and altered his look, but gave his real name at the hospital. The doctor thought that he looked familiar and alerted authorities.
The suspect is from Midlothian, deputies said, but his current address was not known. He was in custody for burglary charges dating back to 1997. Greenlee has a history of non-violent crimes, including fraud and evading arrest, dating back to 1993. He was scheduled to be in court on Thursday. Now, he will also face charges for escaping from prison.
According to the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, 440 inmates have escaped from Texas jails since 2001. Greenlee's escape is the 12th in Dallas County. The Lew Sterrett Justice Center has not been found at fault for any of the past escapes.
