Prestone Helps 'Meals On Wheels' Survive Summer
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The elderly are among the most vulnerable to the dangerous heat being felt across North Texas this summer. And as temperatures are climbing into the triple-digits, one company is helping out by donating to Meals on Wheels, and ensuring that drivers can deliver food to the elderly on time.
Kay Berch spends her day driving around the Metroplex for Meals on Wheels, taking food to the elderly and others who are unable to leave their homes. "I may be the only contact they have a day," Berch said.
"If my car fails," Berch added, "I cannot get to work and I cannot deliver those meals."
So, anti-freeze and coolant company Prestone performed some maintenance on Berch's car and the vehicles of other Meals on Wheels drivers. The 4,000 Meals on Wheels drivers travel a combined 650,000 miles each year, delivering food all over Dallas County.
Mechanics made sure that the Meals on Wheels cars were able to survive in this extreme heat, and offered tips for all drivers who must battle these dangerous conditions. "Check that your tire pressure is correct, so that you're getting the right gas mileage. Check that your wiper blades are in good repair," said Jim Brown with Prestone. "Check that your oil is up to speed and has been changed regularly. Check your anti-freeze."
Former Dallas Cowboys players Drew Pearson and Russell Maryland were also on hand to help bring awareness to the efforts of the Meals on Wheels drivers, who deliver a total of 4,500 meals in DFW each day. "We hope that will bring support to what they do through volunteers jumping on board, but also financial support," said Pearson.
Prestone also donated dozens of fans to the elderly, which the Meals on Wheels drivers will deliver – all in an effort to make sure that those who are most vulnerable receive all of the necessary care.
