Possible Restrictions For Homeowners Who Rent To Sports Fans
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - Arlington residents who rent out their homes to sports fans may soon face new restrictions.
Problems with the short-term renters in the city were really brought to light last fall during the OU/Texas football weekend. Arlington police were called out twice to one house being rented by fans -- it was a house in City Councilmember Charlie Parker's neighborhood. "We had 24 cars on the street, 40 UT students, two calls to [public] service and that's this week and it's been going on for three years," he said during last year's annual rivalry.
The Arlington City Council meets tonight and could pass a plan that would require homeowners, who rent out their homes, meet new restrictions. Parker says the possible changes would require effort and money from the homeowner. "You're going to have to register with the city. When you do register with the city you have to also pay the hotel tax, [which is a] little bit higher tax."
The proposed requirements would penalize the homeowner if the renters misbehave. "Sometimes you can rent to a younger crowd that is here for the night and all they want to do is kinda drink, and party, and celebrate their teams' victory. That is a problem," Parker said. "Say they're rowdy, or they code violations, or whatever, if you have two of those a year then your right to rent your home would be suspended."
With several professional and amateur sporting venues in Arlington Parker says he doesn't see the problem getting any better, so the city needs to protect its neighborhoods. "As we go further down the road and we get more Super Bowls and World Series' and Cotton Bowls and NCAA Championships and that kind of stuff… there needs to be some recourse for the neighbors in the area."
The first vote on the plan will be held at tonight's city council meeting. A final vote could come next month.
