Possible Candidates Vying For Dallas County DA Position

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Hours after former Dallas County district attorney Susan Hawk resigned on Tuesday, several names began to surface surrounding who could replace her at the position.
If Hawk stepped aside a week-and-a-half prior, voters would be deciding who the next top prosecutor would be in Dallas County.
Instead, Governor Greg Abbott will now decide.
"I've never ever lost that thing inside of me that made me run in the first place," said Danny Clancy, an attorney who ran for DA in 2010.
Clancy lost in 2010 in a narrow race. He now has already sent in his application to fill the role.
"There's been so many different stories that have come out of that officer regarding where our elected DA is or isn't. I think that people have come to distrust," said Clancy.
Senior District Judge Vickers Cunningham also ran for DA in 2010 and said the office and voters need direction and leadership.
"First thing you've got to do is rally the troops and say we're steadying the ship," said Cunningham.
While he expressed his sadness for Hawk and her battle with mental illness, Cunnigham said he feels voters deserve better.
"Would have been perfectly happy doing what I'm doing. But I cannot sit by and hope that we'll put somebody that will go to work and be able to campaign," said Cunningham.
Those with knowledge surrounding the process believe Governor Abbott could decide on the next DA within a month.
The chosen person would serve out the remaining term until the end of 2018.
Hawk's most recent first assistant, Messina Madson, has also said that she will be pursuing the position.
