Ponytails, Scissors & Lots Of Happy Sick Girls & Women
COPPELL (CBSDFW.COM) - Dozens of ladies are sporting cute, summer cuts in Coppell and it's all for a good cause. Students at Lakeside Elementary and many of their moms donated their ponytails to the Pink Hearts Funds.
On Friday, Lakeside Elementary became a makeshift hair salon. The school was full of precious, longhaired, young ladies, looking to make a difference.
"I cared for all the children that had cancer, and I thought I had a long hair, so I just cutted my hair," 2nd grader Somya Katiya explained.
Third grader Katelyn Grahow's hair was so long she could sit on it, but she even got 'clip happy'. "I just think that's it's so sweet to donate your hair to other people that don't have a lot of hair, so, that's why I donated it," she said.
Lakeside teacher Jennifer Kubinsky says it's important for young people to know they don't have to wait until they're older to make a difference in someone's life.
Lakeside mom Jennifer Bunting said, "We've had several friends come up with breast cancer in the past few years and I wanted to do something to help."
Pink Heart Funds helps children and adults who have lost their hair. "Whether it's chemotherapy, radiation burns, whatever it is, we'll provide free wigs for them, at no charge," explained Cheryll Fiorendino with Pink Heart Funds.
As the stylists clipped and the ponytails stacked up Fiorendino found her heart filling up. "It just makes them feel okay to the outside world, no one really knows their sick once they've got hair again."
Organizers say it takes 10 donated ponytails to make just one wig. So, the donations made Friday in Coppell will make four human hair wigs, and make four very sick girls, very, very happy.
Fiorendino says the wigs, "put the biggest smiles on their face that you've ever seen. I've never seen girls more happy to have hair again, after they've lost their hair. Nothing beats this, nothing!"
Pink Hearts Funds also provides women with free breast prostheses and lymph edema sleeves after breast cancer surgery.
