Poll Puts Perry Fifth In South Carolina
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - If Texas Governor Rick Perry wants to win the upcoming South Carolina primary, a new poll shows he has a very steep hill to climb.
The poll of 750 likely voters by Rasmussen shows Governor Perry in fifth place with just five percent.
While former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has moved into first place with 27 percent, the emerging trend shows former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum continues to surge.
He's now in second place in South Carolina, just behind Romney with 24 percent.
This is more proof that conservatives may very well be consolidating their support behind Santorum, a social conservative.
A national poll by Rasmussen Thursday showed a similar finding.
After facing numerous political attacks, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who had been in first place, has now dropped to third with 18 percent.
Texas Congressman Ron Paul is fourth with 11 percent.
Governor Perry is releasing a new ad in the Palmetto State today called "Values."
He talks about his conservative record.
Governor Perry will campaign in South Carolina following two debates in New Hampshire this weekend.
Perry has abandoned New Hampshire before its primary this Tuesday.
South Carolina holds the first in the south primary Saturday, January 21st.
