Police: Texas GOP Member Punched Newspaper Editor At Primary Party
BURNET, Texas (CBS DFW) – In Texas, the GOP hit the media with its best shot at a party celebrating Mitt Romney's nomination-clinching victory, if the best shot were to involve two men in their 60s and punches to the jaw and neck.
Johnnie Rogers, a member of the Texas Republican Party's executive committee for Burnet County, turned himself in last week following accusations that the 62-year-old GOP member punched a 65-year-old editor of the community newspaper at a party following Tuesday's Texas primary.
KTWX reports that Rogers, 62, would get into a heated argument with James Walker, community editor of the Burnet Bulletin, during a GOP party Tuesday, which was celebrating Mitt Romney's nomination-clinching primary win. According to police officials, Rogers followed Walker outside, allegedly punching him square in the jaw and neck. Reports of the assault have been rebuked by Republican Party Chairman Steve Munisteri, who has accused Walker of touching Rogers first.
Rogers has been charged with third-degree felony assault, which stems from the state law that classifies assaults involving people 65 years or older as automatic felonies. He was released on $5,000 bond.
