Bank Robbery Suspect Surrenders After Standoff In Arlington
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - A man suspected of robbing a bank in Colleyville and leading police on a chase through multiple cities, has surrendered peacefully after an hours long standoff with authorities in Arlington.
Police officers from several agencies surrounded the suspect's grey SUV, which was stopped with the help of stop sticks, in front of an Arlington school.
"Grand Prairie [police] assisted by disabling the vehicle. They threw out some stop sticks, which basically disables the front tires of the vehicle," said Arlington Police Lt. Chris Cook.
According to police, the bank robbery suspect stole cash from the Bank of America, located at 5701 Colleyville Blvd, around 11:30 am, before leading police on a chase to Arlington.
"The bank robbery, to our knowledge, started in Colleyville. There were several agencies that assisted Colleyville during the pursuit. We received notification around 12:20 p.m. that it was coming into Arlington," said Cook.
Along with officers from Euless, Colleyville, and Grand Prairie, Arlington Police led the negotiations with the suspect. Chopper 11 spotted two armored vehicles on scene as negotiations continued with the suspect.
"We do have some of our SWAT elements on scene, in case he refuses to surrender," said Cook. "Every situation's a little different. He's told us at some point that he would give up and then he hasn't. And so, we'll continue talking with him. We have negotiators on the scene."
Police also confirmed that family members were brought in to assist with the negotiations.
Meanwhile, the nearby neighborhood was shut down to traffic and police were going door to door to warn residents about the activity.
Nearby Ferguson Education Center, located at 600 SE Green Oaks Blvd., was forced into lockdown as the stand off continued for nearly two hours. According to a school district spokesperson, about 500 students attend the school. More than half of the students would have normally been dismissed around 1:30 pm, but a district spokesperson said all students were held on campus until the standoff was resolved.
