Police Shoot, Wound North Dallas Bank Robbery Suspect
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Police shot and wounded a man who robbed a Wells Fargo bank on Coit Road Tuesday after he pointed a pellet gun at responding officers.
Authorities said the suspect arrived at the Wells Fargo branch on 13050 Coit Road near LBJ Highway in a taxi cab. He entered the bank, showed what appeared to be a weapon to the teller and demanded money.
After this, police said he left the bank and hailed a second cab, which drove him about a block away. He then exited the taxi and darted under a nearby car.
"When he did come out, he pointed his weapon at the officers and that's when the shooting took place," said Lt. David Hughes with the Dallas Police Department.
Police officers opened fire after he refused to follow their commands to drop his weapon. Bullets grazed the suspect's head and leg and he was taken to Baylor Hospital. The suspect is expected to survive. Neither his identity nor those of the officers involved in the shooting have been released.
"I was thinking it might be a blowout," said witness Eric Rhone. "We're right by the highway."
After the shooting, police found that the man's weapon was only a pellet gun. Hughes said the suspect did make it out of the bank with money, but was unsure how much.
