Police Shoot & Kill Gunman In Lewisville Shopping Area
LEWISVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) - One person is dead and three Lewisville police officers are on paid leave after a shooting Wednesday night. Authorities were alerted to a problem after receiving a 911 call by employees of a fast food restaurant. The workers, at the McDonald's restaurant across the street from Vista Ridge Mall, reported that a man was outside with a gun.
The female employee working the drive-thru window reported seeing the man holding a gun, approaching vehicles and pointing the weapon at people. That employee gave police a detailed description of the suspect and Lewisville police officers in the area stopped the vehicle a short distance away. "She saw the person walking toward the window with a handgun. I believe she thought they were probably about to be robbed at that time," said Capt. Kevin Deaver with the Lewisville Police Department.
The suspect was driving a black pickup truck with Oklahoma license plates. Deaver said, "The officers did what is called a 'known risk stop' on that vehicle. The driver of that vehicle got out of the vehicle, displayed a handgun, pointed it towards the officers… fired upon that person." Lewisville police said that three officers were present at the shooting, but it is not known how many officers fired their weapons or how many shots were fired.
The suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Roger Preston Hamil of Durant, Oklahoma, was taken to an area hospital but died around 11 p.m.
Lewisville police said that the Texas Rangers are now overseeing the investigation. Lewisville police said that they will investigate whether the suspect was involved in another hold-up at a Wendy's restaurant in Carrollton about 20 minutes prior.
There were no officers injured during the incident, nor any other reports of injuries. The general manager of the McDonald's restaurant, who would only identify herself as Anna, said that the employees were shaken up and went home early. "Life goes on in America," she said.
