FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - A deadly crash closed part of a major highway in Fort Worth for nearly four hours. But as investigators worked to clear the scene of the fatal crash, another accident happened in the backup.
Officials with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) say the second crash happened on Highway 287 and was moved to the frontage road to prevent more tie-ups.
The deadly crash shutdown the ramp from Highway 287 to southbound Loop 820. Officials with Fort Worth police say there were three cars involved – a sedan, a pickup and another vehicle that left the scene.
According to authorities, a man in his 20s was found dead on the side of the highway. One person was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth and a third person was treated at the scene and released. The condition of the hospitalized individual isn't known.
Officials say a group of people traveling in the sedan was on the side of the road changing a flat tire when the pickup slammed into them.
Police are also trying to find out if the fatal crash is related to a possible shooting that happened earlier.
It's not clear why the third car involved left the scene, but police want to talk to that driver and think that person may have hit the man who was killed.
