Police Search For Driver Who Hit & Killed DART Bus Rider

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The search is on for the driver responsible for a deadly hit-and-run accident in Dallas. Police say the driver hit and killed a man just as he stepped off a Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) bus.
The man, who has been identified as Charles Everett Thompson, was hit near West Ledbetter Drive and Polk Street and first-responders say the impact killed him instantly.
The hit-and-run happened around 11 o'clock Monday night.
Investigators say Thompson, 57, had just got off the bus at a DART stop on West Ledbetter. He had stepped from behind the bus and was preparing to cross the street when the driver of the car hit him.
Witnesses say the driver sped away, never stopping to check on the condition of the man. Police have not released the name of the victim.
While there is a DART shelter at the bus stop there is no crosswalk and just a tiny, narrow sidewalk.
Bus riders say they'd like to see the intersection made safer for people walking. "I think they need to put a light or something right here... something that we can cross," DART rider Kyran Combs said. "It ain't no right of way for nobody. Who has the right of way? The people that's walking or the cars?"
Across from the DART stop is a Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) office and a Department of Health and Human Services location, both with service participants who my not be able to afford cars. If riding the bus is their only option, people wanting to get to the state and federal offices will have to cross six of traffic from the DART stop.
It isn't known if the driver of the hit-and-run vehicle was a man or a woman. The only description of the car is that it is a white sedan, that possible has some type of front-end damage.
Police are asking anyone who may have seen something suspicious or has information about the driver to call 911 or contact Dallas police.
