No New Threats As Rumors Swirl At Highland Park HS
UNIVERSITY PARK (CBS 11 NEWS) - There were no new threats Friday at Highland Park High School. Meantime, University Park Police have been questioning students every day. One student said he was questioned three times Friday, twice by detectives and once by the assistant principal.
He said he told them he didn't have anything to tell them. And, police have made no arrests. Meantime, school officials are trying to shut down rumors, speculation, even conspiracy theories running rampant through text messages.
"I'll read it to you. I got a text," said Olivia Ashmore.
Ashmore, a Highland Park High School student, read from her phone: "John Hinckley, Jr. was the guy who shot Ronald Reagan. And he went to our high school."
That is entirely true. John Hinckley, who stalked Jodi Foster and fired several shots at President Ronald Reagan in a failed assassination attempt, graduated from Highland Park High in 1973.
Ashmore read more: "He used .22 rounds and he left notes in the school. And, this act was on March 1st. So, that's today."
True. Hinckley used a .22 but the assassination attempt, in 1981, was on March 30th and nothing happened at Highland Park High School today.
There were no bomb threat notes, no .22 caliber bullets, like the ones found in a boy's bathroom Wednesday. Thanks, no doubt, to increased security.
"The officers did have the wand style at the ready to use as they would see fit. Certainly they will be outfitted with those same wand detectors next week," said Steve Mace, Communications Director for the City of University Park.
The FBI and University Park Police are making progress, he added.
Crime Stoppers had increased their reward to $10,000 which generated a few tips. So far, none have panned out.
