Police Officer Injured During Car Chase
GRAND PRAIRIE (CBSDFW.COM) - The chase only lasted 20 minutes, but Grand Prairie Police say a suspect left a path of damage when he stole a maintenance vehicle from a school Friday morning.
It began at Dubiski Career High School and ended at the intersection of Pioneer and Carrier.
Edgar Hernandez, 20, is arrested, charged with six counts of aggravated assault on a police officer and felony evading.
Police say Hernandez swiped or rammed six police cars and three to four civilian cars during the chase.
Raul Sanchez was near the intersection where police stopped Hernandez.
"We didn't know what it was at first. We thought it was a bank robbery because they were right in front of the bank," said Sanchez.
Detective Mark Beseda says the chase was slow-speed, never topping 30-40 mph. His concern was the path the suspect took -- cutting through a residential neighborhood and parking lots.
One officer was hurt when the suspect rammed his patrol car. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Beseda says a civilian in a red pickup at the final intersection saw what was happening, and used his own vehicle to help police box the suspect in. Officers arrested Hernandez without incident.
"This is a busy intersection, a busy area. It's lunch time and there are a lot of people out, so we're really fortunate that no one else was injured," said Beseda.
