NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (AP) - Two suspects in a weekend break-in at a Massachusetts convenience store had a fowl accomplice.

Northampton officers investigating a robbery in progress at a store at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday quickly found two men and a live rooster in a nearby car.

The men were arrested on breaking and entering and other charges, and the stolen property was recovered.

The rooster was not charged, but was taken to the station for safe keeping.

Police said on their official Facebook page that while they have provided temporary shelter for a variety of animals before, this was the first rooster they had ever taken in.

"We think we had a first this weekend. On the overnight shift, at 3:42 AM, Officers Sullivan-Chin, Zantrofski, and Gregory responded to Mocks Convenience Store on Damon Road for a report of a breaking and entering in progress. While they checked the scene and secured it, Sgt. Golec checked the area and detected that something was a-fowl when he observed two males and their rooster in a vehicle near the Pride gas station. He identified the males as the suspects. The stolen property was recovered and the suspects were arrested and charged with Breaking and Entering in the Nighttime, along with additional charges. The rooster was transported to the station for safe keeping. While we provide temporary shelter for a variety of animals when our Animal Control Officer is not on duty, this is our first rooster. The officers coming in for the day were welcomed by this very vocal guest."

There was no word on why the suspects had the bird. Their names were not released.
