Police Lt. Claims Racism After Denied Promotion
Dallas Police Lt. Regina Smith has filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the city claiming she was not promoted to deputy chief last year because she is black.
Lt. Smith is the widow of Senior Corporal Norman Smith, who was killed in the line of duty during a drug raid in January 2009.
Given the emotional turmoil after her husband's death, Smith claims then-Chief David Kunkle promised her a promotion at a later date. Instead, the promotion to deputy chief went to Tammy Ellzey, a white officer now in charge of the Southeast Patrol division. Smith says Kunkle then claimed he had not promised her a promotion.
She is seeking unspecified damages including compensation for lost wages.
