3 Rapes In 1 Month In Lake Highlands Area
DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - Police in Dallas are investigating a third sexual assault in same neighborhood in a little more than three weeks.
In the latest attack, a man broke into a home in the 8700 block of Aldwick Drive, near Northwest Highway, and sexually assaulted a woman inside.
Chief David Brown of the Dallas Police Department said that the crime happened around 6:45 a.m., shortly after the victim's husband left for work. The victim was still in bed at the time. Brown said that she was able to fight back and scratch the suspect. In Tuesday's rape, the suspect kicked in a side door and, police said, possibly left the scene on a bicycle.
On Friday, the suspect entered through a window and then sexually assaulted a woman. Police believe that the same man could be responsible for the two most recent rapes. Brown said that the suspects share a similar description. "That individual will be a person of interest for us with a scratch on his face, arms or any other parts of his body, who came home today with a scratch, Latin male, 20. We need you to call us," said Brown.
However, detectives believe that suspect Fernando Munoz is the man responsible for the rape in Lake Highlands on February 22. They are awaiting DNA confirmation.
Hundreds of people packed Dallas First Assembly of God church for a neighborhood crime watch meeting on Tuesday night. When asked what they can do to protect themselves, Deputy Chief Andy Accord told the crowd, "My suggestion to you is to do whatever you feel is absolutely necessary to protect you and your family."
Meanwhile, police are increasing their presence in the neighborhood, patrolling on horseback, bicycle and in squad cars. Authorities are also trying to contact all registered sex offenders in the area. "We think it's a lead they can follow. They have to register, so we know their address. We're going to be very aggressive in this aspect," Brown said.
