Police Investigate Multiple Highway Shootings

IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - There has been an alarming number of shootings on North Texas freeways in recent weeks, and police are trying to determine if they are separate crimes or somehow tied to the same suspect. The latest shooting took place at around 9:55 p.m. on Friday night along Highway 114 in Irving.

Crystal Battee said that she was driving down the highway, near Cistercian Road, when a bullet came through her windshield. It shattered before it struck and injured her hand. Another fragment tore into her car's passenger seat. "It was a gunshot and it went through my hand, and I seen it was like a hole," Battee said. "So, at the same time as me driving, I was trying to call 911 at the same time."

Battee did not see the person who fired the shot. She pulled into a gas station to wait for paramedics to arrive.

Police said that the gunshot came from a slightly downward angle, but they do not know if the shooter was standing somewhere stationary or in another vehicle. Authorities hope to test the bullet fragments in an attempt to determine the calibur of bullet and type of gun used in the crime.

Since the beginning of the year, there have been at least eight similar cases in the Dallas area. Some of them have been described as road rage.

"It was scary," added Battee. "I would have never thought that me, you know, any ordinary person just driving along minding their own business and, all of the sudden, out of the blue, they just get shot for no reason."

North Texas law enforcement officials are asking for the public's help in all of these cases. Anyone with information about any of the incidents is urged to contact the Irving Police Department or the Dallas Police Department.
