EULESS (CBSDFW.COM) - Euless Police Chief Mike Brown says it appears the suspect, Jorge Gonzalez, was set on ambushing a police officer on Tuesday when Officer David Hofer was shot and killed in J.A. Carr Park.
"In my opinion he was there to do as much damage to responding officers as possible," says Chief Brown.
Hofer and other officers arrived at the park after reports of gunshots fired.
Chief Brown says Gonzalez had multiple guns on him at the time. Gonzalez was shot and killed by other officers after Gonzalez shot Officer Hofer.
Chief Brown says Jorge Gonzalez broke into a nearby home, stole weapons and went to the park. He took cover in a ditch.
Three officers showed up at the park. Chief Brown says Officer Hofer saw movement, told the suspect to stand up, which he did. Gonzalez then started firing, ultimately killing Officer Hofer.
Police also released the 911 call regarding the shots fired in the park:
Chief Brown says the city is struggling to deal with senseless tragedy but getting lots of support. He says Officer Hofer's actions were heroic and he saved other lives.
Euless Mayor Linda Martin say Hofer was an "ambassador for the community," and received eight letters of commendation in his two years on the force.
