DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Dallas police released new information about a missing woman and her one-year-old son Thursday afternoon.
Officials now believe they know where Heidi Martinez-Trejo and son Carlos Gomez are, but haven't located the pair.
During a press conference police said there are indicators suggesting Martinez-Trejo and her son are in Mexico and that the two left the United States safely. A photo was shown of Martinez-Trejo and a friend crossing the border into Nuevo Laredo at 5:45 Sunday morning.
According to police, the woman had told the friend seen in the photo that she needed to visit her ill mother.
Another photo was shown of Martinez-Trejo and her son at a Dallas Walmart. The surveillance photo shows the woman buying supplies a few hours before leaving North Texas.
Martinez-Trejo had given relatives and even police a story of people invading her apartment and physically assaulting her Friday night, hours before she disappeared. Then the family received a note from her, saying that she thought she would be killed.
Despite the actions and communication from Martinez-Trejo photos taken after her disappearance from North Texas seem to indicate she was physically okay as she caught a ride to Mexico.
Dallas police are now focused on Carlos Gomez. "The concern right now is a child is helpless, so if the child was in danger that's a higher level than an adult," Lieutenant Robert Sherwin told reporters. "Because she can do whatever she wants; a two-year-old can't. At this point the investigation has led us to believe they're safe."
CBS 11 News spoke with the boy's father who said he was overjoyed to hear "the greatest news ever" about his son's safety. He also said he is grateful to everyone who tried to locate his son and the boy's mother.
