Police Believe Allen Teen Was Texting Before Deadly Crash
COLLIN COUNTY (CBSDFW.COM) - A preliminary investigation has led one North Texas police department to believe a crash that took the life of a high school student may have been the result of texting while driving.
Just after 2 p.m. on Thursday, Allen police were called out to a crash at the intersection of West Exchange Parkway and Trinidad Lane. Officers found only one car involved in the wreck. The dark-colored sedan had left the roadway, struck a tree and was lodged against a stone wall.
The teenage driver, Emily Rayyan Stambaugh, was dead at the scene. Investigators believe the girl may have been texting on her cell phone at the time of the crash. Stambaugh, 17, was a student at Allen High School.
Witnesses told investigators the car was traveling between 45 and 50 mph when it drifted to the right, drove over a curb, hit the tree, was spun around 90-degrees and slammed into the wall.
A growing crash scene memorial of flowers, stuffed animals and pictures continued to grow Friday night.
Funeral services for Emily Stambaugh are scheduled for Sunday. Visitation will be held Saturday.
