Police Arrest Suspected 'Checkbook Bandit' Bank Robber
DeSOTO (CBSDFW.COM) - North Texas police have captured the man they say is responsible for at least five DeSoto bank robberies.
Police had dubbed him the 'checkbook bandit'.
"He'd stand in line, holding his checkbook like he was just an average customer," explained Cpt. Ron Smith, with the DeSoto Police Department. "Inside the checkbook was the note saying, "Give me the money." And when he got to the teller he would just open up the checkbook that had the note in it."
Tuesday, the suspect, now identified as Victor Williams, hit a Bank of America in Desoto for the second time.
When leaving the bank the 42-year-old allegedly was confident enough to take his time walking out and casually flipped through the bills he'd just stolen.
Surveillance video from that heist resulted in police receiving several tips, including one with a possible location for the suspect.
"Yesterday evening, late, we received some information – a tip. We followed up on it and it turned out to be good," said Smith.
According to police, officers surrounded Williams Cedar Hill home Wednesday morning and took him into custody without incident.
Williams is believed to have robbed another DeSoto bank on three separate occasions.
