Police Arrest Half Of Suspected Puppy Stealing Pair
NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Police have arrested one of two believed puppy thieves. It's been more than two weeks since the pair broke into separate Petland locations and stole a total of nine puppies; now one man sits in jail.
Police arrested Darrell Wayne Ramirez on Monday. While the 27-year-old suspect is in custody police did not find any of the purloined pooches.
All the dogs were stolen within an hour of each other. Seven puppies were taken from the Petland location on Coit Road in Plano and two puppies were taken from Petland in Frisco.
One of the thefts was captured on surveillance video and shows the suspects using a hammer to break the glass entrance door at the Plano location. The thieves carried suitcases and a laundry basket and used them to haul away the animals.
In all, the puppies taken are valued at about $12,000. Police believe the animals have been sold to unsuspecting customers.
Now the Petland stores are making a special request. They're asking for anyone who may have purchased the dogs to just contact them and let them know the animals are okay. Storeowners say they will make no effort to take the dogs back or to make the owners pay any fees, since they thought they were purchasing the animals legally.
Ramirez remains in the Collin County Jail. He is being held on a $25,000 bond.
Anyone with information about the burglaries or the remaining at-large suspect is asked to contact the Plano Police Department at (972) 424-5678 or Frisco police at (972) 292-5000.
