Plano Stylist Walking, Talking After Airplane Accident
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - A young Plano woman who was disfigured after walking into an airplane propeller blade is out of intensive care.
The family of Lauren Scruggs updated her condition to the thousands of well wishers around the world who have followed her story since the weekend accident.
On Tuesday, doctors removed her breathing tube. And now, Lauren Scruggs is walking, talking and aware of the devastating injuries she continues to recover from.
Jeff and Cheryl Scruggs were full of hope and optimism while offering a detailed update on the 23-year-old daughter's condition.
"She understands she was in a bad accident, but she really doesn't remember any details at all," says Cheryl Scruggs.
Lauren Scruggs was exiting an airplane at a private airport outside McKinney on Saturday night when she walked into a spinning propeller blade. The accident severed her left hand. She also suffered a brain contusion, broken collarbone, and a deep gash down the left side of her face that has blinded one of her eyes.
"She looked at herself in the mirror for the first time today that was big and she said it's not that bad," says Jeff Scruggs.
Scrugg's parents say their daughter is not only aware of her injuries, she's talking and walking.
The FAA continues to investigate the accident and the actions of the pilot involved.
But Lauren's parent refuse to assign blame for what happened.
The family expressed gratitude for those who have contributed to a fund in Lauren's name called the Lauren Scruggs Hope Fund.
