Plano School Board Unanimously Approves Transfer Plan
PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) – The Plano School Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to transfer 172 students from overcrowded Huffman Elementary to Brinker, Haggar and Centennial –– all of which are higher ranking elementary schools.
Haggar Elementary school parents have voiced their displeasure with the plan for days, saying there are better transfer options to alleviate the overcrowding issue.
Joe Richardson, a parent, said, "If the board goes forward with this tonight, we plan to seek financial reparations from the board and possibly board members."
"Please, please.We're beggin you for our children. Take some time and see if there isn't a better alternative," another parent said.
Huffman Elementary School's enrollment was more than 100 percent.
The students being moved live in apartment complexes near the Goerge Bush Turnpike and the Dallas North Tollway.
Haggar Elementary will take students from a low-income housing complex. Students from three other apartment complexes will move to Brinker Elementary School, which is a two-and-a-half mile drive away. Centennial will house the rest.
"The fact is, those Champions kids are going to have to pass through two school zones to get to Rosemary Haggar," one parent said.
However, some parents who addressed the board were pleased with its decision.
"It doesn't divide up neighborhoods," said Andrew Glicker, a parent with a student in the overcrowded Huffman Elementary. "In my opinion, this is not the perfect plan. It's the best plan."
