Plano Police Debut "Choose Your Ride" Vehicle On New Year's Eve

PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) – The Plano Police Department will remind New Year's revelers of the consequences of drinking and driving with a new tool called the "Choose Your Ride" car.

Police will take the vehicle, which is 1/2 police car markings and 1/2 taxi markings, to different businesses that serve alcohol to encourage people not to drink and drive.

"When people see a police car when they are driving, they tend to slow down," said Officer David Tilley. With this car, "we hope to send a subliminal message," he adds. "Maybe somebody walking out a bar, they see this and they will decide to go back in and make a call for a taxi."

Officer Tilley says this is the first time the department has had a car like this. He calls it a "mobile billboard." The car will not be used to give people rides or for enforcement. He says it will be used to send a simple message.

"You have 1/2 police and 1/2 taxi, which half are you going to choose?"

For New Year's Eve, Plano police will have extra officers patrolling the streets looking for speeders, red light runners, and impaired drivers. The department is also participating in "No Refusal" weekend, which began on Friday night and extends through this evening.
