Plano ISD 'Facilitating' A New Learning Environment
PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - Friday was the deadline for students in Plano to apply for a new school unlike any they've ever attended.
The school is one of three specialized academies that will be open to students next year.
It's located in an office building and looks like a business on the inside. But actually it's Plano's newest school.
Academy High School will be a 21st Century learning environment with a non-traditional design and teachers who prefer another title.
"We prefer facilitators," says Renee Godi, the principal of the new school that will provide a specialized curriculum for science, engineering and math with a touch of art as well.
The front entrance to a typical high school usually has student painted banners with mascots. At the Academy you are more likely to find high tech art work created by the students.
"It helps spark imagination and I think that's what really will drive our future," says one of the Facilitators.
Texas Instruments committed $5 million to the academy, which will open this August to 300 students.
Raj Menon likes what he sees at the academy. His son has applied for an education he described as more relevant in today's society.
"By relevant I mean kids having a very real world type setting where they're tackling a problem and a question."
With a projection screen as an inspirational centerpiece, the academy is hoping to find the minds that develop the technology of the future here at home.
