Plano Firefighters Fight 3 Blazes During First Weekend Of 2016

PLANO (CBSDFW.COM) - It was a very busy New Year start for firefighters in Plano. Fire-rescue crews in the city fought three separate blazes during the first weekend of 2016.
The first fire was on New Year's Day at a home in the 8000 block of Alderwood Place. Fire officials say a neighbor called 911 after seeing smoke coming from the roof of a home. When crews arrived they rescued the homeowner's three cats and found a fire had started in the attic. The blaze was extinguished in about 15 minutes, but the home still suffered significant water and fire damage. The homeowners were not home at the time of the fire. The cause is under investigation.
Three hours after the first blaze, firefighters were called to the Springwood Creek Condos on Spring Creek Parkway. First-responders were sent to the location after a 911 caller reported that smoke was filling up their duplex. Initially, arriving crews could not find the fire, but they soon discovered smoke and heat coming from an adjacent unit. The fire, in the kitchen of the unit, was quickly extinguished. The condo resident also was not at home.
The third fire happened Saturday evening at the Lincoln at Towne Square Apartments on Towne Main Drive. Someone driving near the apartments called 911 and reported smoke and flames shooting from the roof a building. As fire crews made their way to the location, a resident of the complex called to say that he thought his fireplace and chimney was on fire.
Once at the scene, crews began fighting the flames and evacuating residents from other apartments in the building. It took about 35 minutes for firefighters to put out the blaze. Damage was contained to three of the 16 apartments in the building. Investigators later discovered the fire had indeed originated in the flue of the second 911 caller's chimney.
There were no injuries at any of the three fires.
