Pitchers And Catchers Report: The Top 10 Most Exciting Days In Sports
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM)- I've read this Tweet multiple times this week: Most exciting words in sports: Pitchers and Catchers Report!
Well allow me to retort: No friggin' way.
Sure, the start of baseball spring training means, sooner rather than later, the commencement of spring itself. Warmer days. Sunshine. Baseball. Bikinis. I get it.
But pitchers and catchers reporting is, in fact, one of the most overrated days in sports. They don't keep score. They don't even play a game. They just … well, report. And then play catch. We can't be that bored, can we?
Today in Surprise, Arizona is a little more titillating in that it's the arrival of Japanese sensation Yu Darvish. But the Texas Rangers are still 11 days from their first exhibition game and a good six weeks from the regular-season opener April 6 in Arlington.
Lazy stretching. Leisurely jogging. Half-speed fielded bunts. Sashaying over to first to take throws from first basemen. I mean, yeah, we're mildly amused. But there are lots of days in sports more exciting than Pitchers and Catchers Report, like …
10. NFL Kickoff Sunday – All across the country hope – and Fantasy Football lineups – are prioritized.
9. Opening Day – Baseball is back. Summer can't be far behind.
8. NFL Draft – The event itself may be boring, but the scrutiny is suffocating and the results everlasting.
7. Daytona 500/ NBA All-Star Game Sunday – Coming up in a couple of days, it captivates both the rednecks and the hip-hop hoopsters to the TV.
6. Final Four – Such a crescendo of emotion and drama that the National Championship Game is usually a letdown.
5. Breakfast at Wimbledon – Rising at 8 a.m. to watch tennis' most sacred cathedral in England has become as American as fireworks on The Fourth of July.
4. Conference Championship Sunday – The NFL's Final Four always delivers. Divine foreplay at its best.
3. Masters Sunday – Nothing like watching the shrinking sphincters of the world's best golfers navigate Amen Corner.
2. Super Bowl – With its day-long pre-game, compelling commercials and NFL finality, it's hard to beat.
1. March Madness Opening Thursday – 16 elimination games with guaranteed drama, and upsets.
