WACO (CBSDFW) - Pilgrim's Pride is recalling more than 4 million pounds of its cooked chicken products.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, items described as "extraneous material" including bits of wood, plastic, rubber and metal have all been found in boxes of whole-grain breaded nuggets, patties, breakfast patties, tenderloins and popcorn-style varieties of Pilgrim's Pride chicken products.

The Waco based company reportedly shipped products to grocery stores and institutions (like schools) nationwide, under the Gold Kist Farms, Pierce and Sweet Georgia brands.

It's unclear how the "extraneous materials" got into the chicken products.

The Pilgrim's Pride chicken involved in the recall has been produced within the past two years.

For questions concerning the recall, call the company at (800) 321-1470 or the USDA's meat and poultry hot line at (888) 674-6854.
