Perry's Presidential Run Cost Taxpayers $3.6 Million
AUSTIN (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry's failed run for president has cost Texas taxpayers more than $3.6 million in travel expenses and overtime pay to agents assigned to his security detail.
The Texas Department of Public Safety on Friday released its latest reports on travel expenses for agents assigned to protect Perry and his family.
Those figures, plus previously reports, show that the agency spent more than $1.8 million on food, fuel, lodging and other travel expenses between Aug. 10 and the end of January, protecting the governor as he crisscrossed the country.
Perry announced his candidacy on Aug. 13 and dropped out of the race on Jan. 19.
Travel costs are separate from the over $1.8 million the agency reports it paid agents assigned to Perry in overtime between August and January.
