Perry Tours Emergency Preparedness Exercise

AUSTIN (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry plans to pay a visit to an emergency preparedness exercise at the Austin airport ahead of hurricane season.

The Texas Department of Emergency Management will stage a resource activation drill Friday morning to make sure state officials are ready for a storm.

The Atlantic Ocean hurricane season begins on Saturday and runs through November. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts between 13 and 20 named Atlantic storms. Seven to 11 will strengthen into hurricanes and three to six that become major hurricanes.

The agency says there is a 70 percent chance that this year will be more active than an average hurricane season.

People living along the Gulf Coast are encouraged to begin tracking weather reports and be prepared in case a storm moves toward Texas.
