Perry Seeking To Lead Republican Gov's Group

AUSTIN (AP) - Gov. Rick Perry's spokesman says the newly re-elected Texas leader expects to be selected next week as chairman of Republican Governors Association.

The group, now led by Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, will vote at a meeting next week in San Diego.

Spokesman Mark Miner said Perry has been lobbying for the job so he can continue to champion his pet issue of state's rights and limited federal government.

Perry has been mentioned as a possible 2012 presidential candidate, but he has insisted he's not interested in the White House. Since being re-elected to a third full term, Perry has been promoting his new book on state's rights.
