Perry Prepares For Iowa With Stops In Plano & Dallas
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - The Iowa Caucuses, the first in the nation, are only a few weeks away. And this wednesday, Governor Rick Perry will kick-off his two-week, 44-stop bus tour through the Hawkeye State.
But before he goes, Perry will be in North Texas attending two fundraisers.
First, he'll attend a luncheon in Plano Tuesday afternoon, and then an event in Dallas Tuesday evening. There, he will be joined by Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal and Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott.
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, Former Rangers & Stars owner Tom Hicks, and Ross Perot Jr. are among the hosts for the Dallas event.
Governor Perry is coming home to Texas to build his financial base of support before campaigning non-stop in Iowa. Most polls show he is trailing far behind in Iowa, with just single digits polling numbers. But one poll out Monday showed Mr. Perry moving back up into double-digits and within striking of third place.
Political analyst John Weekley says it's crucial for the governor to meet with his backers here in Texas. "This will be a good opportunity for the governor to get with his finance people and say 'here's what's going on, here's our plan, and this is where we're going.' So in terms of how well he will do, he would do better in Texas all the way around than he would do someplace else."
Weekley says if Governor Perry does better than expected -- and lands in the top three -- he would revive his campaign at least for a couple of more states such as New Hampshire and South Carolina.
