Perry Holding Ceremony To Sign Water Fund

AUSTIN (AP) - Fresh off calling lawmakers back to work for a special session, Gov. Rick Perry is holding a ceremony to celebrate a bill they passed during the regular one.

The governor will sign into law Tuesday a measure creating a state fund to finance new water projects. The Legislature approved $2 billion for it, but voters must still ratify the fund on a November ballot question.

The last day of the legislative session was Monday. But moments after it ended, Perry convened a special session -- giving legislators 30 more days to pass new bills.

Perry sets the agenda, and so far it only includes new voting maps.

The governor can add other items, though, and conservatives have clamored for measures further restricting abortion and promoting gun rights and school choice.
