Penalty Trial Begins In Dallas Stabbing Case

DALLAS (AP) - A North Texas jury is to begin hearing evidence on what punishment a woman will receive for stabbing a man 130 times before castrating him at a Dallas hotel room.

The penalty phase of Cristal Paulette Richardson's trial begins Tuesday in Dallas, one day after the Dallas County jury found the 29-year-old woman guilty of murder in the April 2012 death of Cedric Lamont Owens. She faces up to life in prison.

Richardson had insisted that she was defending herself after being sexually assaulted when she killed Owens at a Dallas hotel. Jurors, however, deliberated almost two hours before returning its guilty verdict Monday.

Authorities say they found Owens' bloody and naked body in the hotel room and Richardson sitting outside in a stairwell, naked and covered in blood.
