Pedestrian Killed In Dallas Hit-&-Run Incident

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run incident along East Ledbetter Drive, near the intersection with Corrigan Drive, in southeast Dallas. This happened shortly before 6:00 a.m. Thursday morning in front of The Oasis Apartments.

According to witnesses at the scene, a tow truck driver struck a male pedestrian who was in the street. The man was reportedly running after the tow truck, yelling for it to stop. Witness Jazzmen Beaird said that the pedestrian was hit as the tow truck was making a U-turn. The driver got out of the vehicle and walked around to inspect damage before speeding away without rendering aid.

The tow truck was carrying a car away from a nearby apartment complex at the time of the incident, and witnesses reported seeing another person inside of the tow truck when the victim was struck. Neighbors said that tow trucks are often in the area, routinely pulling cars without a 'resident' or a 'visitor' sticker.

Anthony Smith is among the witnesses, and said that the tow truck driver was being reckless. He said that the driver passed through a red stoplight at the intersection of East Ledbetter Drive and Bonnie View Road just before running into the victim.

After the man was struck and on the ground, numerous witnesses ran to protect him from other passing vehicles. Police confirmed that the victim was transported to Baylor Medical Center at Dallas, but pronounced dead. His name has not been released.

Authorities have located the tow truck at a nearby wrecking yard, but have not yet found the driver. Police said that he "went home" after dropping off the vehicle.
