PD: Arlington Standoff Suspect Shot Girlfriend's Ex
ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) - The Arlington man who barricaded himself in an apartment complex for nearly eight hours on Monday, shot and killed his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, according to an arrest warrant.
Amanda Vanston, 22, told police that when she woke up about 6 a.m. on Monday, she saw her boyfriend, 32-year-old Joel White sitting at the foot of their bed smoking a cigarette.
When she asked him if he was OK, he responded that he had shot and killed her ex-boyfriend, 23-year-old, Roderick Pass.
Vanston thought White was joking, but when he told her to walk to their balcony and look down, she saw Pass lying motionless in the parking lot next to his car.
Vanston says while they were out on the balcony, White took an assault rifle and fired another ten shots toward Pass's lifeless body.
White then pointed a different gun at Vanston, according to the warrant, and told her they needed to get away before the police arrived.
Vanston said she managed to escape the apartment and told her neighbors to call 911 and hide for fear White might fire more shots.
When officers arrived at the complex located in the 1100 block of Silverwood Drive at Avenue J, White opened fired on them from the second story apartment.
ABout 25 people were evacuated from nearby apartments and others were trapped in their homes while for nearly eight hours authorities negotiated with White by cellphone.
Arlington PD deployed its unmanned helicopter and called in Grand Prairie SWAT for assistance.
White eventually surrendered around 1:30 p.m. without firing any additional shots.
White has been charged with Murder and is being held on $250,000 bail at the Arlington City Jail.
