Passengers Returning On News Of Beefed Up DART Security

DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - DART appears to have kept its promise of an officer on every train.

CBS 11 rode along on several trains Wednesday and found someone from either DART Police or Fare Enforcement on each one.

The move has already brought back some passengers who were lured by better security to use mass transit.

Stacey Nilsen avoided DART for trips from McKinney to Downtown Dallas, but not anymore.  "I feel much better about riding it more often, probably just to downtown mostly and more functions to the fairs later in the evening," said Nilsen.

"Knowing that they're would be a security officer here or officer on the bus definitely makes me feel much better," said McKinney resident Krista Dooley.

Daily passengers welcome the stricter fare enforcement on trains.  "I find it to be a very good thing," said Dallas resident Alex Dozier, "I just started noticing it yesterday."

DART is also making progress installing cameras at rail stations, including the one where a passenger waiting for a train was shot and killed two weeks ago.

Some passengers like Plano resident Fabian Neil believe DART should focus more on security at he stations than on the rail cars.  "They need to be at the stations I get off at 7 and I'm at the train station its dark and we need more security there at night because I'm the only one sitting there," said Neil.
