Pass On NFL Referee Outrage
Replacement referees should be saluted for allowing the games to go on while the league office negotiates to improve the long term officiating situation.
Instead, they are being diminished and used as ammunition for attacking the NFL and demanding that Commissioner Goodell act immediately to "protect the shield".
I'm not buying in to that. Here are my reasons which by the way get progressively more awesome as you move down the list:
-Nobody has been hurt due to referee negligence.
-No game has been decided on a blown call.
-Outside the lines released a report today. Player safety calls, actually up one from 75 to 74. Instant replay reviews are up, but overturns are down. The replacement refs have called three more pass interference penalties.
-The extra pushing and shoving stuff after the whistle is on the players, not the refs. Act like professionals guys. Besides, it actually makes for a more entertaining game, and nobody is going to get hurt in a fistfight with pads and helmets. And on top of that, the NFL will instruct the subs how to take control of the classroom in week 3.
-Let's not pretend the permanent refs are perfect. Blown calls stirred debate for 17 weeks last year. Referee outrage is nothing new.
-Do you really expect the NFL to back away from their position at the negotiating table and give the permanent refs everything they want just to silence referee critics. If they made a habit of doing that the rules would change every week.
-Why not blame the regular referees for not acting in the best interest of the league? The NFL is trying to create a better referee crew for the future. The refs are trying to keep it the old way which wasn't good.
That is all of my reasons I'm not buying into referee outrage.
