Parsons 'Offended' By Rockets Search For Third Star
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) -- The Houston Rockets swung for the fences in their pursuit of All Star forward Chris Bosh. They missed. They had an opportunity (albeit an expensive one) to retain their own budding star in Chandler Parsons. They passed.
Parsons -- who will now join the Mavericks after signing a three-year, $46 million deal -- commented to Yahoo Sports on Monday on his free agency experience.
"Honestly, I was offended by the whole process," Parsons said Monday in a phone interview. "[Houston] publicly said that they were going out looking for a third star when I thought they had one right in front of them. I guess that's just how they viewed me as a player. I don't think I've scratched the surface of where I can be as a player and I think I'm ready for that role."
Parsons will slide right into the Mavericks' starting lineup at small forward -- a position manned by Shawn Marion over each of the past five seasons.
Shooting guard Monta Ellis compared Parsons to his likely former teammate on Monday, calling Parsons a "younger Shawn Marion".
"He can knock down shots and bring that young energy and talent to the team," said Ellis.
Parsons says he was led to believe that Houston would "match everything", which Rockets GM Daryl Morey had the opportunity to do. Instead, the organization chose financial flexibility over Chandler's hefty contract moving forward.
Though Parsons felt slighted by the team that drafted him in 2011, the 25-year-old showed admiration and respect for the only team he's known in three NBA seasons.
So will the Mavs get a motivated player with a chip on his shoulder? Only time will tell.
