Parents Upset By Grade Change Policy
Parents in Irving are upset over a policy change that they say gives their kids no incentive to do their homework. The Dallas Morning News reports that the district is no longer counting homework toward final grades. Teachers are instead being told to check simply for completion because the district says homework was being used to pad final grades.
At a meeting this week with administrators, parents expressed their concerns over the new policy. They say some kids don't test well, and now final exams and essays are key in determining final grades.
Other parents don't like the fact that late work doesn't hurt a student's grades, and tests can be retaken if a student fails.
The change comes as a result of a revised state law that eliminated 50 as the minimum grade a student could receive. Following the meeting, the superintendent says they're now looking at possibly tweaking the policy.
