Paralyzed Woman Suing City Of Dallas, Says Police Ignored 911 Calls

DALLAS (CBS 11 NEWS) - A North Dallas woman who said she was shot by her ex-boyfriend and paralyzed is now suing the City Of Dallas.

Roxanna Mayo claims the incident could have been prevented had 911 operators acted faster.

During the MLK holiday, Mayo said she got into a heated argument with her ex-boyfriend Quadriq Sharper. Mayo said the situation escalated and Sharper pulled out a gun and shot her.

"I looked around and all I saw was blood. It just felt like my legs were in the air floating," said Mayo.

The bullet hit her arm, but then traveled into her spine, leaving her paralyzed from the chest down. The slug remains lodged in her back.

"I can't work. I can't take care of my family. There's just no excuse. It's just not right."

She has now filed a lawsuit against the City of Dallas, claiming 911 operators ignored her calls for help. Mayo said prior to the shooting, she called 911 four times. She said it was not an hour after she was shot, that police arrived.

"I do this, so she won't end up with a pointed foot, in case God wants to heal her and she can walk again," said Diane David, Mayo's mother, as she rotates her daughter's foot and rubs it.  "I'm praying for that and I'm still believing," said Diane David, Mayo's mother.

Unable to walk, Mayo said the City of Dallas must now face the reality that someone made a decision that has now changed her life forever.

"They need to think about what if it was their wife or their daughter or their mother or somebody that they loved would they show up for," said Mayo.

A spokesperson for the City of Dallas said attorneys do not comment on pending litigation.

Sharper remains in jail on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
