CEDAR HILL (CBSDFW.COM) - One North Texas teen was doing something he loved, until, his life changed in an instant. Now, the paralyzed former high school football player works to motivate others with a message of faith and perseverance.
"There's nothing wrong with my mind, my brain. I'm just not walking right now," Corey Borner explained.
Borner always delivered a hard hit and nothing has changed… except for the obvious.
It was nearly six years when the former DeSoto High School football player lost all movement in his legs. One play in practice paralyzed him.
"Neck popped right there – C-5, C-6 of my spinal cord. Fractured."
Over the years Borner has see his team, his community and others wrap their arms around him with encouraged him. And these days he's doing the heavy lifting.
He said, "I still ask God 'what's the reason?' He probably put me in this chair to slow me down."
Friday he had a conversation with teenage football players from Cedar Hill High. His message – the non-movement in his legs today doesn't make him paralyzed in life.
Borner said he loves the opportunity to tell his story to others. "It keeps me going, motivated. Not only being an inspiration, it's just a better feeling for me as a person."
Cedar Hill player Avery Davis said Borner's message was clear. "Never take life for granted, and God has the ultimate plan for everybody."
Borner is now 22-years-old and a college student with plans to 'play' in the field of broadcasting. "It's a blessing to be alive," he said.
Borner acknowledged he's come a long way, remembering that three years ago he couldn't use a fork, but tells everyone he meets he will walk again.
At the speaking engagement Friday, no one in the room doubted the man in the chair can and will soar.
