Palin Endorses Cruz In Texas Senate Race
DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) - Endorsements often get a lot of attention in political races, but many political analysts say most of them don't matter.
In the bitterly fought Republican primary for U.S. Senate, Ted Cruz, a Tea Party favorite, has just announced that former Alaska Governor and candidate for Vice President Sarah Palin has endorsed him. Cruz has also won the backing of George P. Bush, son of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and nephew of former President George W. Bush.
As we first reported last month, Governor Rick Perry endorsed Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst for U.S. Senate during an interview with CBS 11 News. Dewhurst has also won the backing of former Arkansas Governor and former Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.
Early voting for the May 29 primary begins Monday.
Many analysts believe that Dewhurst will win, but will likely do so after a run-off with Cruz. Polls have shown that Cruz is in second place behind Dewhurst. Former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert and former football player and ESPN broadcaster Craig James are the other major candidates in the race.
They are all vying to succeed Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, who is retiring at the end of the year.
