DALLAS (CBS11) — A family making a cross-country effort to solve a Dallas murder is hoping for the public's help.
It's been three weeks since 66-year-old Lubbie Edwards was found stabbed to death in his East Dallas apartment on Oct.10. Now his family is struggling for answers.
Out-of-state relatives say they have finally had the chance to meet face-to-face with investigators here in Dallas, but they still have little information about Edwards' death.
A Marine veteran and the father of seven children, Edwards only lived in Dallas a few years. Most of his family still lives in Rochester, New York, where his daughter Catina says she received a devastating call from Dallas Police three weeks ago.
"I was just shocked, like there's no way you could be telling me that my father was murdered, like why, who in the world would do something like that?" Catina Edwards said.
Reached by Skype, Catina and the victim's goddaughter, Melba Leonard, just returned home from a trip to Dallas in search of answers. Now they hope someone can help.
"Let us know who brutally murdered our father 'cause he was loved by so many people in Rochester, New York, as well as in Dallas, Texas," Leonard said.
The sight of Edwards' boarded-up unit at the Crestridge Apartments still haunts local friends.
"I'd seen him earlier that morning," Edwards' friend James Romero said. "I had passed him, and he had passed me and said hi like we always did."
Edwards was a popular figure in the community, especially with the neighborhood children.
"'Cause he would play with them, talk with them and ask them how they were liking school," Romero said.
Family members say they remain hopeful for a break in the case, but they know police can't solve it alone.
"I just need help," Catina Edwards said. "That's all, and anyone that can help bring this murderer to justice, I would really, really, greatly appreciate it because we need that killer off the streets."
