Opinion: With Williams Out, Mavs Should Go Nash

DALLAS (105.3 THE FAN) – Now that Deron Williams is staying put in Brooklyn and the likelihood of Dwight Howard following is, well, "likely," another target for the Dallas Mavericks include a blast-from-the-past –– veteran point guard Steve Nash.

During 1998 to 2004, Nash developed his game in Big D after two lackluster seasons in Phoenix. More importantly, he developed a true friendship with a tall, lanky German named Dirk Nowitzki. The two shared many moments: The boy band haircuts at their Mavericks press conference debut, a pair of All-Star trips together and the infamous booze fest at The Loon (Google Image Search: Nash Dirk Loon).

Many years later, both have MVP trophies on their mantles and one is wearing a size 12 World Champion ring. However, take away the accomplishments and accolades and you have two close and aging friends (Nash-38 Dirk-34) who see time running out on their shot clocks.

Should Mark Cuban make a move to get Steve Nash back to Dallas, it is only logical that Nash and Dirk enjoy a KISS-esq McRib-like farewell tour . . one that is not immediate, lasts a couple of years and then suddenly ends following the 2014 season.

My prediction may be blasted by some and given consideration by many, but either way, nothing seems more fitting then for Dirk and Steve to say goodbye in front of generations of MFFL (Mavs Fans For Life), rest assure their numbers will be retired in the rafters of the AAC and take one huge sigh of relief –– before downing shots back at the good ol' Loon.
