PD: Fatal Fort Worth Shooting Began With Laptop Fight
FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) - Officers with the Fort Worth Police Department were involved in a deadly shooting early Tuesday morning. One person was hospitalized and another killed. It happened just after 4:00 a.m. at a hotel in the 2000 block of Beach Street, just south of Interstate-30 in east Fort Worth.
A father staying at Hotel Trinity with his girlfriend and 13- and 11-year-old children had been there for a few days. The family was waiting for their apartment to be readied, so they could move in.
Police say the father knew a man named Derek Ternes, from North Dakota. In the early morning hours Ternes allegedly walked into the hotel room unannounced and without permission and then grabbed a laptop computer.
An argument began when the father confronted Ternes and soon shots were fired.
The hotel manager then heard gunshots and called 911.
Investigators say when officers arrived Ternes was walking away from the scene with a gun in his hand. When police tried to talk to him Ternes fired shots at them.
Officers returned fire, hitting and killing Ternes.
"He was determined to shoot an officers," Fort Worth Police Sgt. Pedro Criado said of the incident. "Based on the fact that we were able to run a tag of the suspect vehicle and on that tag there was a cautionary link that the suspect was occupying this vehicle and he did state that he was going to have a shoot out with police."
Ternes only other run in with the law was for speeding. CBS 11 News learned Tuesday afternoon that Ternes owned a fitness business and had fallen on hard times.
The 34-year-old father, whose name hasn't been released, was was taken to JPS Hospital in Fort Worth in critical condition.
No police officers were injured.
