Oncor Crews Helping Sandy Power Outages
MESQUITE (CBSDFW.COM) - North Texas energy provider Oncor sent work crews to the east coast on Monday morning to help restore power to areas about to be slammed by Hurricane Sandy, when the storm makes landfall on Monday night. The workers from Oncor left at about 6:30 a.m. from a truck yard in Mesquite.
It will take 22 hours for the workers to reach Baltimore, where they are set to assist crews from Baltimore Gas & Electric. The groups from Oncor are scheduled to arrive on Tuesday night in order to start helping at sunrise Wednesday morning. Oncor sent 60 employees and another 60 contractors. They are prepared to stay in Maryland for two weeks.
"We have each other's back, and that's really what this is about," said Oncor spokesperson Kris Spears. "When situations arise, where utilities don't think they'll be able to meet the demand, is really when the Mutual Assistance Program comes in handy. And, like I said, we really don't know what kind of weather to expect."
Oncor crews will be helping to cut tree limbs that have fallen onto power lines, string new wires, and replace broken transformers.
