HOUSTON (AP) - A plan to turn the iconic but deteriorating Houston Astrodome into a giant convention center and exhibition space is to be presented to Harris County leaders.

County commissioners in Houston will officially receive the proposal during a meeting Tuesday.

Last week, the Harris County Sports & Convention Corp. voted to recommend the project, dubbed "The New Dome Experience." Officials say it would cost an estimated $194 million and take about 2 1/2 years to complete.

The sports board opted to go with its own plan instead of one of 19 private-sector plans submitted for its reuse.

The stadium has been vacant since 2009, when it was deemed unfit for occupancy.

It hasn't been home to a sports team since the Houston Astros moved out in 2000.
